Ian MacKaye... you have to respect this man. Influential frontman and founder of band like Minor Threat, Embrace, Fugazi, and most recently, The Evens. He has always followed his DIY aesthetics in an era where it was much harder to do. His bands created 'zines, recorded and distributed records, and booked shows and toured all before the internet and computer programs like Pro Tools were ever around. They kept their overhead low and worked hard which paid off for them not by selling millions of records but by being true to themselves, not being a slave to a record label, and ultimately doing what they love for a living.
Fugazi's sound in the early years was a departure from the hardcore sound of Minor Threat and had a lot of heavy Zeppelinesque riffs. Ian's and Guy's vocals were always very distinct and which added to their amazing sound. 13 songs is a compilation of Fugazi's first 2 EPs and still manages to capture their raw post-punk sound but adds a layer if refinement that works quite well while keeping the energy alive.
I'm not a music critic... just a fan. Give Fugazi a listen. The music is great even on first listen but the more you listen, the more they grow on you.
